BG Yeo visits SilkAir memorial

Visiting Trade and Industry Minister George Yeo yesterday visited the memorial for victims of the SilkAir MI 185 crash.

Together with Acting Environment Minister Lim Swee Say, he placed three wreaths at the memorial and sprinkled flower petals over the gravestones as a mark of respect for the 104 people who died in the 1997 disaster.

Brigadier-General (NS) Yeo is heading a 40-member business and government delegation on a four-day visit to Indonesia, with Palembang as one of their stopovers.

Yesterday, he called on South Sumatra Governor Rosihan Arsyad for talks on strengthening trade links between Singapore and the province.

Governor Rosihan, a retired navy admiral and pilot, and BG Yeo go back a long way.

BG Yeo said they first met in 1988 when Adm Rosihan was piloting the aircraft he was travelling in during a visit to Sulawesi.

Today, the delegation will visit Pekanbaru to see the business opportunities available in Riau province.

On Monday, BG Yeo witnessed the signing of a 20-year agreement with Indonesia to buy natural gas – a second multi-billion-dollar gas deal just weeks after the first delivery of gas from West Natuna.
