Suharto will be first person to get UNDP award

President Suharto will receive a United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) award for his efforts to fight poverty in Indonesia.

It is a first because the award has never been bestowed on an individual before, said Foreign Minister Ali Alatas.

He will be presented with it at a ceremony at the state palace on Sept 8, he added.

Poverty afflicts 11 per cent of Indonesia’s 200 million people.
